15 Dog Breeds That Are College Mascots

There are more colleges with dog mascots that you might imagine. Sure, you probably know that the University of Georgia are the bulldogs and that the University of Connecticut are the huskies. However, canine college mascots don’t end there. With college students heading back to campus soon, I thought it would be fun to do this roundup of 15 dog breeds that are also college mascots.

Bulldogs

The bulldog is one of the most popular school mascots. Some of the schools that are known as the bulldogs include Butler, the University of Georgia and Yale.

Boston Terrier

It’s not surprising that Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, has chosen the Boston terrier as its mascot. What is surprising is that Wofford University all the way south in Spartanburg, South Carolina has a Boston Terrier mascot as well.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Not only is the Chesapeake Bay retriever the official mascot of UMBC–the University of Maryland Baltimore County–the dog breed is also the official state dog of Maryland.

Golden Retriever

Even though the Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in America, I could find only two schools that currently have or once had a Golden as their mascot. They are University of Tulsa in Oklahoma (current) and Kent State University (former).

Great Dane

Currently, there appears to be only two U.S. universities that have a Great Dane as their mascot. They are the University of Albany, part of the SUNY system in New York State, and Bluefield State, an HBCU in West Virginia.

Greyhounds

Long before the fictional Richmond Greyhounds of the TV show “Ted Lasso,” there were a number of American colleges with a greyhound mascot. They include Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts, Loyola University Maryland, Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and the University of Indianapolis in Indiana.

Bluetick Coonhound

The University of Tennessee appears to be the only school in the United States that relies on the Bluetick Coonhound to be its mascot. The AKC didn’t even recognize the Bluetick Coonhound as a legit breed until 2009.

Bloodhound

The mascot for the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City is the bloodhound. Its sports teams go by the John Jay College Bloodhounds. Did you know that some consider the bloodhound to be one of the dumbest dog breeds?

Husky

The husky is almost as popular as the bulldog as a college mascot, as at least a half dozen colleges and universities refer to themselves as the Huskies. This includes UConn (University of Connecticut), the University of Washington, Michigan State University and Northeastern University.

Irish Setter

Pace University in New York calls its mascot T-Bone. It is, in fact, an Irish Setter. Pace appears to be the only school with this dog breed as its mascot.

Scottish Terrier

Two colleges have a Scottish Terrier mascot and they couldn’t be more different. There is Agnes Scott College, a private women’s college in Atlanta, Georgia, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. CMU teams go by the Tartans as their colors are a Scottish tartan.

Saluki

The dog mascot for Southern Illinois University Carbondale is the Saluki. So, they are the SIU Salukis. Salukis, which are a Western Asian sighthound, are one of the fastest dog breeds.

Collie

The Texas A&M University mascot is a collie called Reveille. Over the years, there have been many different Reveille dogs.

Labrador Retriever

The University of Nebraska Medical Center mascot is the Labrador retriever. At Boise State University, a specially trained Labrador retrieves the tee after the football team’s special teams unit leaves the field. So, while not officially the school’s mascot — it is a bronco, after all — this is close enough to count and be included here.

Red Fox Labrador retriever

Recently, Union College in Schenectady, New York, completely changed up their mascot. Previously, it was just the Dutchmen. Now, it’s an adorable red fox Labrador retriever called Charger.
