If you adopt a dog on Christmas, you may be considering holiday dog names. Much like girls born on Christmas end up as Noel, pet parents will often give a holiday themed name, if that’s when the dog joined the family.

Holiday Dog Names

But Christmas isn’t the only holiday that inspires girl dog names or boy dog names. In fact, there are multiple holidays throughout the year that you can use to come up with a clever holiday themed dog name.

Here are the most popular holidays throughout the year that inspire dog names. Have fun reading through this list.

You can really have some fun thinking of dog names, both male and female, with Valentine’s Day as your inspiration.

Some to consider:

Dog names related to St. Patrick’s Day

There may be a few reasons you’re looking for dog names inspired by the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

One, maybe you’ve adopted an Irish breed of dog. In fact, there are eight well-known breeds that are native to Ireland, according to the American Kennel Club.

They are:

  1. Glen of Imaal Terrier
  2. Irish Setter (shown above)
  3. Irish Terrier
  4. Kerry Blue Terrier
  5. Irish Wolfhound
  6. Irish Red and White Setter
  7. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
  8. Irish Water Spaniel

Two, maybe your own family has Irish heritage and you want your dog’s name to reflect that.

And, three, perhaps your pup joined your pack on St. Patrick’s Day or some time in March.

There are all good reasons to choose a dog name inspired by the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

Easter holiday themed dog names

When it comes to Easter themed dog names, I’m guessing most families will stick with monikers related to the commercial aspect of Easter. You know, bunnies, candy and more.

Of course, there are plenty of Biblical names associated with Easter that you could name a dog. Also with Christmas. So I’ve added a section at the end of this article to include Biblical names for female and male dogs.

For now, though, I’m going to stick with the more lighthearted name suggestions associated with Easter.

Halloween themed names for dogs

As I mentioned at the top of this article, Halloween is one of the holidays that many pet parents like to celebrate with their dogs.

I’ll admit to having dressed my dogs up for Halloween from time to time, such as my dog Sadie dressed here as a devil. How on brand for her.

Now as far as naming your dog based on this holiday, I would say there are fewer options than with other holidays.

That is, unless you choose to name your pup after horror movies or TV shows that we might associate with the Halloween holiday. Or characters you, the human, might dress up as on Halloween.

FYI, we named our dog Buffy long before “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” became a thing.

Some names that come to mind, for either male and female dogs, related to the Halloween holiday, include:

  • Bones
  • Buffy
  • Buzz
  • Casper
  • Charlie
  • Freddy
  • Jack (for Jack o Lantern)
  • Joker
  • Harry
  • Igor
  • Luna
  • Misty
  • Pikachu
  • Pumpkin
  • Shadow
  • Skittles
  • Tootsie
  • Woody

December holiday related dog names

Probably the two most common holidays in December are Christmas and Chanukah. And I’ve already established that pet parents definitely include their dogs in those holiday celebrations and traditions.

Also, I know that lots of families bring a pet into the family as a gift at this time of the year. Next year you should give them a photo calendar of their dog as a gift.

So, with all of that in mind, here are some Christmas dog names and a few Chanukah dog names thrown in for good measure.

Biblical names for dogs

As I mentioned earlier, I realize that some people may want to give their dogs a Biblical name associated with the Easter or Christmas holidays. Or, frankly, even Chanukah–Judah Maccabee, anyone? Or Passover?

So, I’ve added this section on Biblical names for both female and male dogs. Hopefully, you’ll find a name that sounds right to you. Heck, my name is Biblical–Leah–so I get the attraction.
