Now that I’m living in Southern Maine, I’m well aware of the Portland Minor League baseball team with a dog mascot–because the Sea Dogs have one on their logo. However, the Sea Dog isn’t actually a canine.
Sea dogs are how people sometimes refer to harbor seals. Also, a sea dog is an experienced sailor. With regards to this Maine minor league baseball team, the logo of this mascot combines two animals. It has the head of a dog (with a baseball bat in its mouth) and the body of a seal.
Baseball Teams with a Dog Mascot or Logo
So, we’ve established that the Portland Sea Dogs don’t, technically, have a dog as their mascot. However, that doesn’t mean that other minor league baseball teams are all the same.
In fact, I found a handful of teams with a dog on their logo or in their name or as their mascot. Read on to discover who they are.
There are a handful of minor league baseball teams that have a dog mascot or logo. Some of them are:
Charleston RiverDogs

Charlie is the canine mascot of the Charleston RiverDogs, the minor league baseball team in Charleston, South Carolina. The RiverDogs are the Single-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
As far as the RiverDogs logo goes, well, Charlie is chomping down on a baseball bat. Finally, what kind of dog is Charlie T. RiverDog? No one knows. But with his long, floppy ears, I would guess some kind of hound.
Plus, here’s why I know: he’s definitely not a Boykin Spaniel, the official state dog of South Carolina.
El Paso Chihuahuas
The El Paso Chihuahuas are the Triple-A Minor League Baseball affiliate of the San Diego Padres, mentioned a little later in this article for their coolly named stadium. Anyway, it doesn’t take much imagination to envision the El Paso Chihuahuas mascots—it’s a Chihuahua dog.
Also, in case you didn’t know, this team plays in El Paso, Texas. And what is the Texas state dog? The Blue Lacy.
Lake Elsinore Storm Dog Mascot

I’ve never met a green dog, and chances are you haven’t either. However, that didn’t stop the Lake Elsinore Storm in Lake Elsinore, California, from creating Thunder. This Big Green Dog (as opposed to Clifford, the Big Red Dog) is this Minor League Baseball team’s official mascot. From what I’ve heard, Thunder is quite the party animal.
The Lake Elsinore Storm is the Single A Minor League affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Midland RockHounds
The Midland RockHounds play minor league baseball in Midland, Texas. Earlier in 2023, they introduced the teams three mascots. Yes, that’s right there are multiple mascots for the Midland RockHounds. However, only one is a dog–Rocky the RockHound.
What’s a RockHound? Beats me. However, he looks similar to McGruff the Crime Dog, who was supposedly a bloodhound.
Finally, as far as the RockHounds mascot, Rocky seems to be some kind of miner. He’s wearing a hard hat and holding a pickaxe.

Independent baseball teams
Outside of the MLIB — Minor League Baseball — there are a handful of independent, professional baseball teams with dog mascots or canine-adjacent mascots. These include:
- Erie SeaWolves
- Lincoln Saltdogs
- San Diego Surf Dawgs
- Glendale Desert Dogs
Finally, did you know that the Major League Baseball team the San Diego Padres play in a pet-themed stadium? That’s right — home base for them is Petco Park.

If I’ve missed any dog mascots affiliated with professional baseball teams, please post a comment and let me know.
